KAPITI RAPID - 25 MAY 2019
There was a fair bit happening in the region over the past 7 days, with Kapiti Chess Club leading the way with their Annual Rapid Tournament being held on Saturday 25 May 2019.
With over 30 entrants in the Open Section, the tournament was one of the Clubs largest turnouts for some time.
As could be expected, with some of the best in the country having Wellington Chess Club as their home base, the "Open" section was very strong with International Masters, Russell Dive and Anthony Ker taking part, along with Fide Master Scott Wastney.
Unfortunately as of going to print, No games were available for publishing, however the main results of the tournament are shown below:

THE BLUE TRAIN CHESS CLUB
BLUE TRAIN v RONGOTEA CHESS CLUB
On Sunday the 26th May, The Blue Train held its first tournament with a friendly match against the members of the Rongotea Chess Club. This was the first time many of the players had actually played a competitive match against "outside" opposition and placing players for an even match-up was a little challenging.
Both clubs are relatively new to the chess scene with Rongotea formed in October 2018 and the Blue Train in March 2019. They both focus on playing a "Social" brand of chess where discussing the merits of the game is not met with a hoard of "Shhhhes" and having a little back ground music considered "soothing".
After formal greetings and house rules were completed the teams got down to business and as it was a pleasant day, the match was held outdoors on the "Platform".
Despite the first round being tied 2.5 - 2.5 The Blue Train turned up the "Steam" in the 2nd round, coming out on top 4 - 1, with a final score of 6.5 - 3.5.
Selected games of the"Rated" players are shown below:
Alan Winfield( BTCC) v Cedric Backhouse (RCC) 1 - 0
Ajayan Thiruchelvan (RCC) v Paul Frost (BTCC) 0 - 1
Club Captain Alan Winfield congratulates both Paul Frost and Ian Liddell for scoring wins with both Black and White Pieces and to Blue Train Proprietor, Chris Evans who took his first "Match Point" in Chess. Appreciation also to Glen Addleton who is keen to show he can join the winners circle soon 😊
It is also appropriate to thank Chris for a supurb Lunch in between rounds which both teams thoroughly enjoyed. (There is no truth in the rumour that Rongotea were nobbled with a few "Micky Finns"!!)
This is how to enjoy a Chess Match !!
KAPITI CHESS CLUB - CLUB NIGHT
Prior to the Weekends action, Kapiti Chess Club continued with the 2nd series of the Leo Eicholz Trophy Board with last Tuesday being Rounds 3 and 4.
All the games of round 3 went the way of the higher rated players with the exception of current Club Champion, Gordon Lyall who lost his first game of the tournament to David Paul.
Round 4 had two of the top 3 playing each other again with Ross Jackson coming out on top over David Paul. New member Neels du Plessis taking the point off Guy Burns and a topsy turvy game between Brandon Holman and David Scott saw Brandon eventually come out the winner.
