THE BLUE TRAIN CHESS CLUB
The new "Blue Train Chess" Club is nicely rolling along with a small core of players turning up each Tuesday night, along with a few new faces seeing what it's all about.
The idea is to provide a venue where both established and new players can meet for a social evening to play the game of "Kings" and give those keen to learn more, an opportunity to have instruction from some of Kapiti's established players.

If you fall into this group, come along and jump on Board.

The French Defence-A strong defence for Black

During a training session on the train last week, we discussed different openings and one that arose was "The French Defence".
Most beginners learn the game by playing the standard openings of the Ruy Lopez and Guiocco Piano (The Spanish/Italian Openings) where both players fight for control of the centre.
The "French" is a little different in that it allows White to play e4 and d4 right away and then looks to attack from the wings.   In a recent game at the 2018 Batumi Olympiad, a little known player rated 1600 took on an opponent rated 2150 and demostrated how lethal this "Defence" can be!!

In the game below Black executes the French Defence to perfection.   Firstly allowing white to form a strong centre, encourages White to advance the "e" pawn then counter attacks from the wings and opens up lines of attack against the White King which leads to a smart "Mate" on h3.

M Lahav (Isl) 2160 v M Shibati (Jpn)1600

Not bad for someone rated 600 pts below her opponent!!.

CHESS ON THE LOCAL SCENE

Over at the Kapiti Chess Club, the Rose & John Kingston Memorial Trophy was completed with the clubs top two players taking 1st and 2nd Placings. Winner of the tournament was Club Champion Gordon Lyall with Ross Jackson taking the runner-up spot.

WELLINGTON CHESS CLUB

Down in Wellington they have been playing their first tournament of the year and with two rounds left to play, things are really hotting up.

The last two rounds (5&6) saw many of the clubs (and NZs') top players face off against each other and with players of this class, wins are hard to come by.  That aside we can show you some intriguing games.

SUMMER CUP ROUND 5

Anthony Ker 2475 v David Cilia-Vincenti 2208

White is in a strong position but time on the clock may have been a factor in agreeing a draw.

Ryan Winter 2118 v Nic Croad 2445

Draw by 3 move Repitition. A Good result for Ryan.

and from Round 6

Ryan Winter 2118 v Anthony Ker 2475

White cannot stop Blacks next - R(8)h4++

The above game was the only clear win from the leading players and gives Anthony a 1/2pt lead.

Current standings for Top 10 couldn't be closer!!
