FIRST NIGHT BACK

Last week was our first night of the new year and with around 50% of the club membership turning up, it was a reasonably good night for some friendly games and to get to know our new home!!

It was particularly pleasing to see most of our Juniors turn up and if their enthusiasm continues, we may look to restarting the Junior training programme again after the AGM.

Though I am sure it is not needed, if some have been away, then this is a quick reminder that the John Kinston Memorial Trophy commences this coming Tuesday.   A half point bye will be available for one round during the tournament, providing the player advises a committee member of their unattendance prior to 7,30pm of the night of the round.  Contact details on our web site.

Look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.

NEW ZEALAND CHESS OPEN 2019

Last week also saw the conclusion of the NZ Chess Championships which saw an impressive 4 visiting Grand Masters taking part.  As could be expected they dominated the top places, however our own (Wgtn Region) duo of Anthony Ker and Russell Dive acquitted themselves with honour in being two of 6 players sharing third place with 6/9 only 1 pt behind the joint winners.  (Anthony going undefeated!!)

As the highest placed "Kiwi's" they both share the title of 2019 New Zealand Chess Champion.   As joint holder from 2018, Russell can genuinely say he defended his title !!

As a foot note, Anthony has now won the title 14 times and is starting to threaten the record of 20 titles held by the late (and great) Ortvin Sarapu.

With everything in the balance in the final round, both Anthony and Russell were drawn against Grand Masters.  It certainly is not easy at the top!!

See how they both fared....

IM R Dive 2295 (NZ) v GM D Johansen 2345 (AUS)

IM A Ker   2318 (NZ) v GM V Papin 2491 (RUS)

Well that is all for this weeks installment and I am looking forward to the start of our own battles coming up in the next few months.

I am hoping more of you will start recording your games and submitting them for publication so that we can have a variety of  games from all grades.

Hope you have enjoyed this issue and always Remember - Keep your King Safe and your Knights Sword Sharp!!

Yours InChess
Alan Winfield
