The Set will be at the club rooms on Tuesday so if anyone is interested, please be generous as funds go to the running of the club

2018 KAPITI CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Round 5 of the club Championship produced a few upsets/surprises with Alan Winfield's poor form continuing with a loss to Club Captain, Lars Dobbertin-King.  Despite good counter play being available Alan was not looking in the right places and Lars seemed to find all the right moves from his perspective.  Ultimately a fine win for Lars who certainly played better on the night.

Fortunately for Alan, Tournament Leader, Gordon Lyall was also having his own problems in finding the right calculation and though in a winning endgame of K+3P v K+2P position, misjudged a pawn exchanged which allowed Alistair to Queen a pawn - Game Over!!

Other results in the "A" Grade saw Ross Jackson and David Paul play out a fairly uneventful draw.

In the "B/C" Grades Rick Lowe succumbed to John Whibley. Mark Wooward drew with Mark Summers and Rose lost to Brandon Holman.

With School holidays there was not a high turnout so a number of "Bye's/half points were awarded.

Games to Play Through

The following games have been submitted for publishing.  All members are reminded that if they wish to have their games published to "Notate" the game and pass on to either Alan or Lars.

A Grade - Round 5

Lars Dobbertin-King v Alan Winfield

The game started out quite balanced but with the players castling on opposite sides it was sure to be feisty.

Both players came out and established aggressive set-ups but it was Alan who went astray first with his response to 13.fxe5 ..Ng4?   His plan was to threaten the forking of the Rooks on f2 but take e5 with the Knight keeping the long diagonal open to attack whites King.  Whites responses nipped this idea in the bud pretty quickly.  14.exd6! White threatens Be7 and getting his Rooks on the 'f' file.  Black looks for an aggressive counter response with 14...bxa3. but fails to find the correct follow-up moves.

After move 19....Nh6 "Stockfish" gives the position as equal despite Black being the exchange down.

For compensation his Bishop is very strong as is the pawn on b2.  however when the opportunity arose, Alan fails to see it!!.  On three occasions on moves 22 to 24 Black needed to play Qa3 and eventually pays the penalty.  Move 25...Qa7 is met by the an excellent response by White. 26.Rxf5!!  and when the exchange is rightfully declined, White does it again on move 30.Rxf5!! breaking Blacks defences.   After  37.Qf6+ Black resigns as he cannot stop 38.Rf3 followed by 39.Rg3.  A fine win by Lars!

A Grade - Round 5

Ross Jackson v David Paul

No fireworks here with two equally strong players giving much respect to each other.  Neither player went above .070 on "StockFish" assessment.

CHESS LESSONS FOR ALL

This week we are going to look at "The Vencura" Position.   A Rook and Pawn v Rook ending whereby the Rook defends and stops the Pawn from Queening.

From the position above against correct play white should come away with a "Half" point.  However if White is not careful, should the pawn be on a3, then Black has chances of winning by using the 'a2' square to hide the king from checks and maneuver the Rook to b1/b2+  then King to b1 and Queen the pawn.    So how does White stop Black from doing this?

MEMBERS ABROAD

Apart from the Kapiti 3 taking part in the Wellington Club championships we also have another Kapiti member flying the Clubs Colours at the North Island Championships - David Scott.

With his rating at 1728 David is still on the journey of climbing the ratings ladder however, if his 1st round result is anything to go by, it may not be long before he is knocking on the 'A' Grade door.   No comments - Play through the game and enjoy (Oh! and check out his opponents Rating!!)

North Island Chess Championship 2018

David Scott (1728) v Mathew McNabb (2223)

It's not often you get the chance to "Check Mate someone with a I.M rating.  Incredible result and well done and well deserved David.!!!

In the Wellington Championships, Ross' partner failed to show so only Alan and Gordon were involved on Thursday night.   Gordon was drawn against the top seed, Edgar Benitez and had a tough game with his opponent giving very little away, however in coming to a very respectable draw, Gordon gets his first point /half, on the board.

Alan was drawn against an "Old Friend" from his time at the club in the 90s, Dr Brett Mullan.

Wellington B Grade Championship 2018
Round 4

Brett Mullan v Alan Winfield

Trying to lift his spirits from recent losses Alans concentration didn't wane - until the end!!  Fortunately for him he was well ahead being the exchange and two passed pawns to the good, however, making an error and losing the two pawns is not a good way to win!!.   But win he did.

After 46.Rd1, White  simply exchanges Rook for Bishop, and takes f4, leaving a leaving White the impossible task of stopping Blacks 'g' pawn and defending his Q/side pawns.  After 3 games he has 1.5 points and sits in joint 2nd place.

Gordons game with top seed Edgar Benitez was pretty similar to that of Ross and Davids.  Two players evenly matched on the night with Edgar not really looking to come out and fight!!

Gordon Lyall v Edgar Benitez

Well that is all for this weeks issue.   Round 6 of KCC Championship commences next Tuesday so please try to be on time.

Remember - Keep your King Safe and may your Pawns become Warriors !!

Yours InChess
Alan Winfield
