CHESS SET PRESENTATION

Members will be aware that the club have been given the above decorative chess set as a "Gift" from the late Mr Kay Hollis who was a past member of the club.

Mrs Sylvia Hollis will be coming to the club on Tuesday night (30 Oct) to formally present the club with the set in accordance with the wishes of her late husband.

This is a very nice gesture much appreciated by the club and all members are asked to ensure they are in attendance by 7.45pm   Thank you. Alan Winfield - Club President

2018 BLITZ CHAMPIONSHIPS (3 + 2)

Last week saw a break in the Club Championships with the final round of the Club "Blitz" Championship.   This has been played throughout the chess year, with one night dedicated to approx 8 games whereby all attendees play each other in a 3 + 2 time limit Swiss.

Going into last weeks final round, Club Champion Alan Winfield had a 1.5 pt lead over last years winner, David Paul and Club Captain, Lars Dobbertin-King.

Following a poor start Alan saw his lead disappear after only two rounds with a fortunate draw against Geoffrey Gunawan and a loss to Lars.

Key games during the night were David beating Lars and Lars coming back to beat Ross Jackson in the next round and Alan beating David to pull back the point he lost to Lars.

When the dust settled at the end of the nights play, Alan scored 5.5 from 8, David scored 6 from 8 and Lars won the nights play with an excellent score of 7 from 8.

Final Table of the Tournament was:

3+2 1 2 3 4 TOTAL Pos'n

The Club Championships resume next week (30/10) with the commencement of Round 1 of Series 2.

PLAYERS ABROAD

The Kapiti 3 were in action again last Thursday albeit 2 were and 1 wasn't due to his opponent failing to turn up.  This unfortunate occurrence was Alans game against Fabian Day.   As the Club Captain had not received any notice of the absence, Alan claimed the game after a 1 hour wait. A Note on this issue is made below.

Of the two games played, Ross was held to a draw by Dr Brett Mullan when he held the initiative for most of the game and Gordon Lyall let slip a promising start and succumbed to a strong attack by Mathew Sole, a young and upcoming player.

Forfeiting of Games

With the situation having arisen this week, I thought it would be a good idea to bring this issue to the attention of members in the event they too find themselves in the same situation.

FIDE Rules and Regulations state that a player forfeits a game if he/she fails to show, after 1 hour has elapsed from the start of the game.   In the event both players fail to turn up, the Tournament Director will start the clock and if neither show, black will be declared the winner.  If White turns up, Blacks default time (1 Hour) commences when White makes the opening move.

NZ Chess Rules and Regulations are pretty similar however they also provide for the Tournament Director to "Nominate" a shorter default time, at the commencement of the tournament.

These rules apply to "Standard Tournament" games and not Rapid/Blitz where these will be governed by the Tournament Director.

Wellington Club Championships

Unfortunately I am dependent on Wgtn Chess producing games played so that I can download and publish here.  Todate they have not produced last weeks.  This week I have only one from the Kapiti 3 which is Round 7 between Alan and Gordon, played today at the Paraparaumu Library.

Alan Winfield v Gordon Lyall

Yet again another hard fought match between two of Kapiti's best.    Alan opted for his favourite London System and found Gordon well prepared.  With both sides aiming for control of the Queen-side Black managed to secure a slight initiative with pressure along the "A" file.  With the game reasonably balanced Alan tried a central break but came undone when this did not pan out as he wanted and handed Gordon a stronger initiative.   This was further compounded by a blunder on move 30 when in defending the 'a' pawn he should have played 30.Kb1 and consequently lost the 'a' pawn.

On the plus side, Alan managed to turn the game into a K+B+P v K+N and was able to put up a blockade whereby Gordon was not able to advance his extra pawn.   After 4 hours of play a draw was agreed with both players offering mutual respect to each other.

That is all for this week and always Remember - Keep your King Safe and may your Pawns Bravely March Forward  !!

Yours InChess
Alan Winfield
