2018 KAPITI CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
As mentioned earlier 16. Bxb8? (16. Ng5!! -threatening Nxh3). After this scare, Gordon takes control of the game and goes on to win.
A game where White finds himself under the "cosh" by winning the exchange!! Ross shows just how strong two Bishops can be. Much to Davids credit, the battle cry "Best form of Defence is Attack!!" was heard on the battle field and when both his Rooks were being attacked by Blacks "White" Bishop, he ignored both and countered on the King side to "get at" Blacks King. In Ross' defence he was running short on time (4 mins to Davids 24 mins) and he helped Davids cause by 40....Kxg5 bringing his King into the open when Kg6 stops immediate checks on wins the exchange back with a comfortable position.
Round 6 and the end of Series 1 was completed last week and again a few upsets/surprises occurred in all grades.
Top match of the evening was between current and former Club Champion Alan Winfield v David Paul. Their game is shown below however, as could be expected with two evenly matched players, there were not too many fireworks and though David probably had a slight edge towards the end, Alans' defensive position was fairly strong and bigger risks were needed if either side were to force a result. A draw was agreed after 24 moves.
Current leader of the pack Gordon Lyall escaped with a solid win after John Whibley missed inflicting a damaging blow on move 16. when instead of exchanging Bishops, (16.Ng5 !! forces 16...Nxf2) or Black loses the Bishop on h3 for nothing. Sometimes we only get one opportunity and it can be tough to spot it. Though a loss, John played with excellent fighting spirit against our current form player!!.
In the other two A grade games Lars and Alistair played out a "Rapid" draw with Alan and David next to them hardly completed the Opening and our surprise of the evening, David Scott showing he is coming into form too with a very good draw against Ross Jackson. Though Ross was probably slightly ahead the dreaded "ticking of the clock" made the offer of a draw a wise option. See their game below. Somewhat interesting, in that though David was no doubt please to win the exchange, he also learned just how deadly a passed pawn supported by the two Bishops can be. Full marks to him though with good counter play at the end to ensure he came away with a share of the spoils.
In the B and C Grades, Guy Burns was defeated by Mark Woodward, Valera came out on top in the battle of the 'Juniors" with a surprising win over Mark Summers. Geoffrey came away with the point with a win over Rose and two visitors to the club Andrew and Asher both found playing against seasoned club players is not easy with Brandon and Hamish both coming away with a win each. Our late arrival "Rick" earned the "Bye" ticket"

Game 3
Alan Winfield v David Paul
Not too much to comment on in the game. Both sides developed well with David taking the early initiative. In the final position whites backward d pawn is well protected and with the King able to add to its defence there were not too many weaknesses to exploit.
