Welcome Club members to the new Format for our Weekly News Letter.

For the next few weeks the page will be a "Work in Progress" whilst I look to find the right balance in format and presentation but if anyone has an idea or two they think will help please feel free to drop me a line.

The main reason I have changed the News Letter to a "Blog" format is to be able to present full chess games in a "Live" format which will allow readers to play through the games rather than having to take the notation and play the moves over a chess board.

There will be changes made over the next few weeks as I am looking to introduce computer analysis to the games to show how the search engine views the positions after each move.   Feed back on this idea welcomed.

I am also looking to introduce a training section whereby we can show set positions and demonstrate how they should be handled. (ie K v K+P endings or how to handle the "Opposition). Again, feed back on this idea welcomed also.

Well, to kick off this issue you all are aware the Club Championships have started with two rounds completed so far and to show right away the benefits of this format have a look below at two of the games from last week.

First up is the game between Gordon Lyall against David Paul.  Gordon currently sems to favour the "Polish" opening.  This is not a very common opening but if Black is not careful it can be very effective in giving White a strong position for the middle game.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2018 - Round 2

Gordon Lyall v David Paul

After exchanges on g6, Black effectively has 3 isolated pawns, to White's 5 and White getting ready to occupy the 7th rank.

It is difficult to see where Black went wrong in this game as for most part David had a solid position. Gordons, 20.Ba3, pinning the knight and atacking b7 deserved a "!" and pressure with the f and g pawns proved to be a winning combination.

Our second game from last week involved Club Captain Lars Dobbertin-King and Ross Jackson.  Unfortunately for Lars, Ross' decision not to resign a lost position proved to be justified when Lars blundered the ending and handed Ross a half point.

Ross Jackson v Lars Dobbertin-King

From personal experience (Winfield v Lyall Rd 1) Failing to finish off a won position hurts however, with Lars' agreement we will use this game as an example later when we do a training session on end game technique.

KAPITI CHESS CLUB v INTERNATIONAL MASTERS

Two weeks ago we hosted a Trg session with IMs Russell Dive and Anthony Ker.   Up against two of the best in the conrty the club did not fair too well going down 14.5 to 0.5.    To honour our only success, below is the game between the IMs and our own Gordon Lyall

A highly creditable draw !!  Well done Gordon.

KAPITI PLAYERS ABROAD

With our new format in place I thought it would be nice to reprint the game submitted by David Scott which shows his very good win over a player 200+ ratings above him at the 2018 Waikato Open earlier this year.
